5 Myths About Semen Volume (And What Science Says)

The internet is overflowing with advice about semen volume, and an alarming amount of it is complete nonsense. Forums, social media, and even some “health” websites repeat the same myths as gospel truth — and guys keep wasting time, money, and energy on approaches that don’t hold up under any scrutiny.

I’m going to take the five most persistent myths about semen volume and put them under a microscope. For each one, I’ll show you what people believe, why they believe it, and what the actual research says.

Myth #1: Celery Dramatically Increases Semen Volume

The Claim

Eating celery — especially celery juice — significantly increases semen production because it contains androsterone and androstenol, which are supposed to boost testosterone and stimulate seminal fluid production.

Where It Came From

This myth has been circulating since at least the early 2000s, popularized by men’s magazines and blogs. The kernel of truth is that celery does contain androstenone, a pheromone-like compound related to testosterone metabolism. Some sources made the leap from “contains a testosterone-related compound” to “boosts testosterone and semen volume.”

What Science Actually Says

The amount of androstenone in celery is pharmacologically insignificant. We’re talking nanogram quantities — far below any threshold that would influence testosterone production or semen volume in a human body weighing 70-100kg.

There are zero peer-reviewed studies demonstrating that celery consumption increases semen volume in humans. None. The myth persists purely through repetition.

Celery is a healthy vegetable — it provides fiber, water, and some vitamins. Eat it if you like it. But don’t expect it to do anything special for your loads. The nutrients that actually impact semen production are well-established: zinc, selenium, vitamin C, and omega-3 fatty acids, delivered through foods that actually contain meaningful amounts of them.

Myth #2: Bigger Loads Always Mean Better Fertility

The Claim

More semen volume equals better fertility. The more you produce, the more fertile you are. Some guys pursue bigger loads specifically because they believe it means their reproductive system is healthier and more potent.

What Science Actually Says

Semen volume and fertility are related, but they’re not the same thing. Sperm cells make up less than 5% of total ejaculate volume. The rest is seminal fluid — water, fructose, enzymes, and minerals from the prostate and seminal vesicles.

A man with 5ml of semen and 10 million sperm per ml has 50 million total sperm. A man with 2ml and 80 million sperm per ml has 160 million total. The second man produces less fluid but is significantly more fertile in terms of sperm count.

The World Health Organization’s reference values for normal semen include volume (1.5ml minimum) and sperm concentration (15 million/ml minimum) as separate parameters. You can have excellent volume with poor sperm quality, or modest volume with outstanding sperm health.

That said, abnormally low volume (below 1.5ml) can indicate issues with the seminal vesicles or prostate that might co-exist with fertility problems. And very high volume doesn’t hurt — more fluid provides a better transport medium for sperm. But the relationship is “sometimes correlated,” not “directly proportional.”

If fertility is your actual concern, get a proper semen analysis from a fertility specialist. Volume alone tells you very little about reproductive capability.

Myth #3: NoFap for Months Will Give You Superhuman Loads

The Claim

Extreme abstinence — weeks or months without ejaculating — continuously builds up semen volume, resulting in massive loads when you finally release. The longer you wait, the bigger the load.

What Science Actually Says

There’s truth to the concept of abstinence increasing volume, but it plateaus much sooner than most people think. Research consistently shows that semen volume increases with abstinence up to about 3-7 days, after which gains taper off dramatically.

A study published in Fertility and Sterility examined semen parameters across different abstinence periods. Volume increased significantly between 1-3 days of abstinence, moderately between 3-5 days, and showed minimal additional gains beyond 7 days. After about a week, your body reaches equilibrium — production roughly matches reabsorption.

What happens with very long abstinence (weeks or months)? The body reabsorbs older sperm and seminal fluid through a process called sperm phagocytosis. Your reproductive system doesn’t just endlessly stockpile fluid. Old components are broken down and recycled, maintaining relatively stable reserves after the initial accumulation period.

Extended abstinence can also reduce semen quality. Studies have found that sperm motility and morphology decline with very long abstinence periods as older, degraded sperm accumulate. The sweet spot for both volume and quality is 2-5 days between ejaculations.

So yes, spacing things out helps. But going monk-mode for 90 days won’t give you loads 30x bigger than a 5-day gap. The returns diminish rapidly after the first week.

Myth #4: You Can’t Increase Volume Past Your Genetic Maximum

The Claim

Your semen volume is genetically determined, like your height. Some guys are just built to produce more, and there’s nothing you can do to significantly change your natural output.

What Science Actually Says

Genetics do play a role in your maximum potential — just like genetics influence how much muscle you can build. But very few guys are anywhere near their genetic ceiling. The gap between where most men ARE and where they COULD BE is enormous.

Consider: the same man can produce 1.5ml when dehydrated, zinc-deficient, stressed, sleep-deprived, and ejaculating daily — or 4-5ml when well-hydrated, nutritionally optimized, well-rested, with a strong pelvic floor, after 4 days of abstinence with extended edging. Same genetics. Vastly different output.

The research supports this. Studies on zinc supplementation, hydration, and lifestyle factors consistently show significant variation in semen parameters within the same individuals under different conditions. Hunt et al. (1992) demonstrated measurable volume increases with zinc supplementation alone. Pelvic floor training studies show improved ejaculatory function independent of any genetic factor.

Your genetics set the ceiling. Your habits determine how close to that ceiling you get. Most men are operating at 40-60% of their potential due to suboptimal hydration, nutrition, muscle conditioning, and timing. That leaves massive room for improvement.
